JEWEL OF THE SOUTHby Bob Russo

People travel copious amounts of miles or should I say kilometres in search of that little bit of paradise to unwind, go fishing and get results. Unfortunately there is usually a considerable cost involved when you eventually find that paradise. As the years crept up on me I thank God that I have found my little bit of paradise two and a half hours drive south of Sydney. I would even go as far as calling it “The Little Gem of the South”. I am talking about the place I call home these days. The sleepy little fishing village of Greenwell Point on the N.S.W South Coast.
What it has to offer

As I mentioned, most places that are a little out of the way and have that cosiness about them come at a price. I believe Greenwell Point is a very affordable place to stay over and has a lot to offer. The Point has good accommodation, nice restaurants, caravan parks, three boat ramps, public swimming pool, club, and fresh seafood on tap. At the Anglers Rest Caravan Park, boat hire is available with no boat licence being needed as well as an assortment of tackle. The accommodation is tops and right opposite the wharf. Add to that the mandatory country pub that I might add sells half a steer as a T-bone steak in its bistro. I must not forget the Pelicans, who always put on a great show for the tourists. If in Nowra, McCallums Sports has an enormous array of fishing, snorkelling and cycling gear. Gavin, John and Scotty will only be too happy to put you in the right direction to get a feed of fish. These guys have a very intimate knowledge of the local area and are very gifted anglers that know what they are doing.

Types of Fishing available

The wharf is famous for its fishing and many a local will be happy to tell you of the fish that have been caught there. Then there is the Shoalhaven River, its tributaries and the break wall at the mouth of the river. If you fancy outside fishing it is a big fish smorgasbord for the game fisherman and bottom bouncer alike.

The Wharf

The wharf has quite a few fish species that congregate around its barnacle encrusted pylons. Fish such as black fish, bream, flathead, tailor, yellowtail and some monster Jew fish have been taken there as well at night.
Getting good green weed can sometimes be a problem. If you have no weed, again you can usually purchase it from the Anglers Rest.

River

The river boasts of sand flats, oyster leases, deep holes, drop-offs, and shell and gravel beds. All these things make for excellent fishing opportunities. Having a small boat makes life a lot easier but it is not essential. The Comarong Island punt allows you to access all along the river right up to the entrance. Some big Jew has been landed from the wall on the beach side using the large Storm soft plastic lures. The Shoalhaven River runs all the way up to Talawah Dam. Up at these extremities of the river bass are in good numbers and make for exciting fishing.
The river hosts many species of fish including blackfish, bream, flathead, mullet, flounder, whiting, tailor, jewfish, bass and estuary perch in some places.

Callala Bay

Callala Bay is only a ten minute drive from the Point and gives you access to the beautiful Jervis Bay. Callala boasts of great snorkelling, fishing, boat ramp and a long jetty to fish from as well as frequent visitors in the dolphins. All this and there is more just make the trip down and see this truly beautiful part of God’s great land.

If you are looking for some great Christian fellowship when down this way then try the Christian Outreach Church at North Nowra. A great family focused church.
