Salmon and Tailor – Foreshore Road, Botany Bay
As the warm waters of summer arrive, quick to follow are the schools of millions and millions of baitfish. And following these are two predators that I love to chase with light tackle – Salmon and Tailor! Both eagerly chase down rapidly retrieved meta lures and soft plastic stickbaits, surging through the water before a crunching strike, quickly followed by zinging runs and aerial acrobatics that set the pulse racing. Sensational stuff!
A little-known spot where these speedsters can be caught
from the shore on Botany Bay is along Foreshore Road at the storm water outlets,
about 600 meters before the Botany Road traffic lights. A 20 meter stroll
from the roadside leads you to the beach and the outlets where large schools
of baitfish aggregate at high
tide.
You can stand on the end of the outlets and flick around
metal slices like Halco
‘Twisties’ and ‘Hexagons’ or minnow lures such as
Lively Lures ‘Mad Mullet’ in the
3” and 4” sizes. Soft plastics will take fish too, such as Squidgy
Flickbaits, with the
‘Evil Minnow’ colour working exceptionally well. Be warned however,
that tailor
will make short work of these soft plastics, so if they’re about, stick
with the hard bodies, if possible.
While the salmon and tailor are slicing through the baitfish
on the surface, bream and flathead will be feeding on the scraps underneath,
so you can target these by twitching soft plastics along the bottom or slowly
retrieving some of the smaller
minnow style lures like the ‘Mini Mullet’ or ‘RMG Scorpion’.
As the tide falls, you’ll be able to wade to a drop-off about 50 meters out. There is a hole about 3 meters deep in front of the most eastern outlet and you’ll also stand a chance of catching trevally and frigate mackerels. For bait fisho’s, this is a great spot to pick up bream and some thumper whiting with nippers and blood worms.
