What is the difference between a dedicated Marine Battery and a normal car battery?

A: In some battery shops it is only the sticker.

The main difference is the actual way the battery is constructed. Most car batteries only have the plates locked across the top inside the battery case. Dedicated marine batteries, such as the Century Marine Pro range, incorporate Plate Lock this is where the plates are locked both at the top and bottom of the battery.
Also, the plates in these batteries are made a lot thicker to help absorb the vibration from wave pounding.
Another advantage of these thicker plates is that it gives the battery a higher reserve capacity (RC) which allows you to run the basic accessories such as control instrumentation, radios and navigation lights etc. and still leaving enough power to start you up to get you home.

If you require to run more accessories you may have to look at upsizing your battery. At Battery World we will sit with you and discuss your requirements and size the correct battery for the job.

Q: What is the difference between a Starting Battery and a Deep Cycle Battery?
A: Good question fellow fisho’.

Basically a Starting Battery is just that a starting battery. It is designed to supply a lot power to the starter motor at the point of starting and then recharge quickly for the next go. A Deep Cycle Battery is designed to allow it to be deeply discharged and recharged numerous times. An example of where you would use a deep cycle battery is if you wanted to run an electric outboard or a fridge etc.

A starting battery would also do this but the constant deep discharge would soon destroy it.
An easy way to tell difference between these batteries is that Deep Cycle batteries are rated in Amp Hours (Ah) and starting batteries are rated in Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

At Battery World we stock both the Century Deep Cycle and the US battery range of flooded cell batteries and we help you size the correct battery for the job. We also have access to a complete range of Sealed or Gel cell batteries but please bear in mind that these can cost up to 2-3 times the price of flooded cell batteries.

Another tip when using deep cycle batteries is not to take them past 80% depth of discharge the more power you can leave in battery after use the longer life it will have.
